Dafont Font Research

Above are some examples of rock style fonts. One of which is called VTKS Rock Garage Band and i have entered the name of my band into this font. As you can see on the bottom of the two screenshots. However it is slightly gothic and hard to read, so i have not used it.

Dafont Font Research

Above are a few examples of the type of font that are generally used perphaps for a masthead on a rock magazine. A particular one that i like is Retro Rock Poster. However it may not be very good for a masthead as it will not be 100% clear and easy to read for the customer.

Out-takes Of Photos Which Are Unsuitable

These are two examples of unsuitable photos becuase they are both heavily over-exposed.

Final Double Page Spread Photos

These are the three photos i have used for my final double page spread, i have converted them to black and white to fit the stereotype of masculinity and rock music.

Final Contents Page Photos

These are the five images i have used on my final contents page. The main image is the first one as it is bigger than the rest on the contents page. This is becuase i am using the same band for a double page spread, so it has more importance.

Final Front Cover Photo

This is the photo i used for my front cover, i used the magnetic lasoo tool to cut around the subjects. By doing this i was able to see my masthead while at the same time be overlapping on one of their heads.

Minor Refinements To Final Front Cover

I have made some changes to my final front cover. The first change is that ive made FULL METAL JACKET a darker red colour, this is becuase i thought the lighter red would not refer to rock as much as dull colours.

The second change to my front cover is that the BRAND NEW FIRST EDITION has an outer colour of yellow, this is becuase it contrasts better with red and is easier to see.

The top and bottom banners have also changed to a lighter grey, this is becuase it draws attention to the text inside the banners.

The forth and final change is that i have moved the band slightly to the left, and moved the cover lines further up and more onto the black background. This makes trhe covre lines much easier to see.

Audience Research

The target audience of my magazine ROCK'N'ROLL is appealing to is that of the heavy metal or slightly emo fan. This genre of music is guitar based hence the guitar influenced title of ROCK'N'ROLL. The primary target audience is from 16-30 years old but it appeals to metal fans of any age. So in fact the audience age is that of 16-40.

My target audience is a mainstream rock target audience and predominantly male, however Some females will feel represented in the magazine. My demographic image of my target audience will be individually minded, musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and personality.

This is accurate becuase my music magazine consists of a dark dull house style and colour scheme assosiated with rock, metal and emo fans. This in turn will represent a male audience as stereotypically dull colours reflect masculinity.

Generic Conventions Of A Double Page Spread

The layout of this magazine links in very well with its genre. Again on this magazine their is a lot of pictures which shows that the readers of the magazine may be more interested with looking at pictures then reading long articles and lots of complex text.
The language which is used is quite informal and not very complex, this could link in with the target audience which would be teenagers and people who are into rock music.

Generic Conventions Of A Double Page Spread

This magazine layout is very effective. The bright colours which are used really well helps to catch the readers attention. It draws the reader in and helps them to understand what is going on.
The bits that the editor of the magazine wants to see the most are the bits which stand out the most. The fact that the article has very little text on it refers to the target audience. A younger generation viewer would not like it as much if there had been more article text in it.

Practice Photography

The above two photos are practice photos, both of which will not be used for my magazine as they are just practice images to give me more of an understanding into photography.

Practice Photography

Above are three photographs which work taken during a group activity. The photos represent practise shoots which are simular to real band photo poses taken at random for this given activity.

Final Draft Front Cover

The above image is a final design of my front cover. All that is left to do is to replace the image of Saxon (also known as full metal jacket) on my front cover with an original photo of my own.

Research Into Existing College Magazines

This is an existing college magazine. My own college magazine will follow the generic characteristics of a college magazine such as this, i think this not very good as a front cover becuase it appears to feminine and the image looks distorted and hard to see, however this may just be the effects.

Set Project Brief

The assignment set for my Media coursework consists of producing a replica music magazine aimed at a specific target audience. To do this i will need to research into similar media products such as an existing music magazine which shares the same genre of audience and music. The magazine i have chosen to research is Kerrang! this is because i hope to have made a mock magazine of a simular demographic readership to this.

To help me make my music magazine, i will have to learn how to use professional publishing software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements and Quark Express. I will use both software to develop a front cover and a contents page of a college magazine, which will be good practice for when i do my music magazine. To demonstrate my knowledge of using such software, i will produce camstudio videos as evidence of using them.

After the production of the college magazine, i will produce an essay on Bauer and IPC, two media conglomerates which produce mainstream and niche magazines of all genres. Then it is a case of producing resewarch and draft copies for a provisional music magazine front cover, contents page and a double page spread. The provisional magazine will have existing bands and artists within them, however my replica magazine will have original photos and graphics. To chose a front cover, i will ask for feedback from my peers and tutor to help me decide on what to use on my draft front cover.

Further reearch will help massively, so i will be doing font research, article research, audience research and photography research. This will help me narrow down a specific demographic readership.

All that is left to do is to produce my own magazine using original photographs, and to evaluate using evaluations, conclusions, treatment plans and production schedules to finish of my project. I hope to have all this completed by May 8th 2009.

Final Draft Double Page Spread

First Draft Treatment

Production team:
Wayne Miller

My work will consist of a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. My magazine genre will be a niche rock magazine. My magazine will follow the generic elements of a music magazine, especially Kerrang! Because it is a similar magazine genre to my own magazine.

My target audience will be aged 16-40; this is because rock music is followed by a range of age groups. I have chosen an age group of 16-40 because rock appeals to them, for example, they will enjoy going to gigs, tours and playing instruments. My target audience will be predominately male; this is because stereotypically males prefer rock music. However a small percentage of my audience will be female, this is due to a rise in ‘female rock fans’. Evidence of his is that my front cover will have a female lead singer.

Front cover = inside or outside of college.
Two actors with electric guitars
One female lead singer
One male drummer

Contents page = some inside of college, others outside of college.
Some solo artists
Some live band photos

Double page spread = outside of college.

Interview = with the band on my front cover about the obstacles they had to overcome while performing.

Before starting my own magazine, I researched existing rock magazines, particularly Kerrang! And analysed their generic characteristics. From this I was able to produce my own magazine, based on what I had seen and learnt about Kerrang! I also looked into front cover image research where I chose 3 images for a draft front cover and chose one to put on my magazine. I did further research into styles and layouts when I compared various fonts to see what goes well with a rock magazine.

I also researched a Kerrang! Front cover, contents page and a double page spread. For my own double page spread, I will have to interview the band to gain feedback to be able to write a precise article about the band.
